Trekking trail in Croatia on the island Dugi otok

First of all you have to know that Dugi otok is the outermost and longest island in the Zadar archipelago. It is precisely the hiking trails that fascinate walkers because in just a few square kilometers they are between Sakarun beach and Kornati National Park.
Consider to start from the village Verunic in the far north of Dugi otok, where you walk along the coast in direction of the big lighthouse. Be aware to pack a bottle of water as there are no markets on your way.
With this easy walking trail you discover the great beauty that nature and island offer.
It’s impossible to get out of Dugi otok without leaving a piece of your heart there.
The trail
On this 12 kilometers route you will pass bays overlooking the Adriatic sea with undeniable gorgeous landscapes and the the biggest lighthouse in Croatia. While you walk on paths between very fascinating old stone walls. This trek of Dugi otok takes you to the island’s border.
First you park your car at the Gorgonia Apartments in Verunic.
Next follow the path along the sea and once you overcome the height difference of about 20 meters, a flat section through olive groves and uncultivated fields awaits you. On the left follow the path that leads to Lucica Bay, a very stunning spot. Before you go on take a swimm in the crystal clear sea.

Now you return to the main road and walk to the junction that leads left toward the harbour Brbinj, while you keep to the right in direction Veli Rat until you get to the village Polije. After passing the bus stop on the left you are near to the cliff overlooking the Adriatic sea.
If you want to get the best of Dugi otok, detour fifteen minutes from the main road and reach a small Paradise. From here you have stunning views and with a some luck you will get to watch dolphins swimming in deep water.
Then get back to the main road and follow the directions to the lighthouse. Now the road gets narrower. On your right you will pass over the village of Veli Rat and the yachting Marina.

Finally you reach the big lighthouse and it is time to get out your packed lunch. First, however, you might feel like taking a swimm in one of the bays. Of course you’ ll be amazed by the white pebbles contrasting the blue sea and the green pines. After the walk it is great swimming in this water so beautiful that it feels like cream.
Sit on the romantic bench at the foot of the lighthouse. From here you have stunning views on the the two islands of Lagnici and further in the distance to the island of Molat.
Don’t miss to look for the llighthouse keeper and climb to the top of the lighthouse. The climb alone offers adventure for the magnificent circular staircase. Only the last section is narrow and steep, but the view from the top is spectacular! If you are looking for great sea photos make the climb!

Now it is time to return. But before explore a detour to the left where you walk along an enchanted path under a natural gallery of pines trees planted by the men of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
In fact, this path together with the lighthouse are a legacy of the passage of this culture and their domination of this territory .

Trekking in Croatia – The circular trail of Verunic
Once your trek continue in the direction of Veli Rat, you pass through the narrow streets and nice stone houses of the village Veli Rat. Enjoy the look at the agaves and the pink bougainvilleas flowers.
After a couple of bends the route back takes you to the small village of Polije and through the vegetable gardens between stone walls.
Finally you pass by the old cemetery to return to the parking space.
